The Fact + Fiction team talk gym bags, pilates and switching off with Dawn Wilton from Body Control Pilates. New to pilates? Not sure what the benefits are? Read on.

What’s your background / how long have you been teaching at Body Control?

Prior to becoming a Pilates teacher I was a Pre-Press Shift Manager within the Printing Industry. I suffered with chronic back pain which led me to try a Pilates class. After the first class I was literally hooked and became pain free. This led me to change my life and career and in 2007 I qualified as a Body Control Pilates Teacher.

What’s so different about a Body Control pilates workout?

Body Control Pilates is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality. It ensures that Pilates is accessible to everyone of all ages and abilities.

Body Control Pilates breaks down classical Pilates exercises so that they can be taught step by step giving the clients the strength and flexibility they need to gradually perform more complex exercises if they are appropriate.

How is Pilates different from other exercise?

Pilates is a mental and physical body- conditioning programme that uses exercises to change the way in which we use our bodies.

What are the main benefits of pilates?

It aims to improve joint function and muscle recruitment patterns, by restoring good postural alignment and natural normal movement.

How often do you work out / what’s your favourite way to stay in shape?

My favourite way to stay in shape is Pilates, not only is it great for my body but because I teach it I need to make sure I perfect the exercises. Along with my own self practice I attend one group Pilates class a week and one private session. I try to run 3 times a week as well.

What do you eat on a typical day?

I'm a Vegan so a typical daily diet is porridge and blueberries with a drizzle of maple syrup for breakfast. Lunch would be something like avocado and hummus on wholegrain bread and dinner would be a homemade Vegan coconut curry with brown rice.

 What’s your top beauty tip?

I've just started using Elemis Superfood Oil. It's amazing. My face feels incredibly nourished after each use, especially in these winter months which tend to dry out my skin.

What could you not live without?

I couldn't live without my family and friends, avocados, fresh homemade juices, walking or running in the countryside and of course Pilates! I also LOVE my Fact + Fiction bag - its the best ladies gym bag I've owned. Its such a stylish gym bag!
