We caught up with stylist and blogger Charlotte Kewley as she talks journalism and new mum tips!
I’m a baby & kids fashion stylist and editor. So I style shoots for brands and magazines and write baby/mama style pages for mags. Then there’s The Little Stylist my website/blog/instagram I launched earlier this year! It’s my third baby. My other 2 are Isabella, 4 and Jesse, 2 and we all live in East London along with my husband!1. Tell us a little bit about you
I’ve worked in fashion/magazines for 17 years. I started on teen mag Sugar as a Fashion Assistant when I was 18-years-old! I worked in women's fashion (on mags and as a freelance stylist) for years but made the decision to focus on baby/kids/mama around 4 years ago. It’s a booming, fun, inspiring market and I love it!2. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m from Lancashire and I was desperate to move to London and work on a magazine for as long as I can remember.3. What inspired you to get into styling / blogging / media?
I started my blog, The Little Stylist because I wanted a digital presence (magazines aren’t what they once were) and also somewhere I could feature all of the amazing pieces I see regardless of price/advertisers. I find so many great high street bargains as well as finds from independent brands - I wanted to share them.
It’s a total juggle. My daughter just started school and my son goes to nursery 3 days a week (then my mum/MIL help out too - my mum travels down from Lancashire every few weeks to stay - I love it when she’s here, she makes me calm) so on those days it starts with the drops. My husband works long hours so weekday childcare is 95% down to me. Then I start my working day. I usually work from home unless I’m on a shoot or having a meeting with a client/brand/photographer - I usually try to do these first thing (I love a fancy breakfast) so then I can get on with work for the rest of the day. I have a lot of lists but I never get everything done and usually end up working in the evenings/at the weekend. A typical work day could be prepping for or styling a shoot, writing for a mag or working on my website… or, as is often the case, trying to do them all at the same time. Luckily I LOVE what I do so it’s like a hobby as well as a job.4. As a busy mum, how do you manage your day?
I love denim dungarees. Or floaty boho dresses. And I’m obsessed with everything from Doen. I wish they’d get a UK stockist so I could avoid all the shipping charges! And I just ordered some Veja trainers so I imagine I’ll live in them for most of the winter.5. What’s your go-to outfit on days when you don’t know what to wear?
I use Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, I used to do a lot of styling work for the company when I worked in womens and I love their products. And then The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid. I’m trying to take more care of my skin at the moment - I feel like now I’ve hit 35 I need to put a plan in action. I have Skinceuticals facials at Cowshed whenever I can for a good clear out. And I keep reading about Sunday Riley. Desperate to try some of the products.6. What’s your beauty regime like? Any fave / swear by products?
My family7. What 5 things can you not live without?
Chocolate - I eat chocolate every single day
Black eyeliner - I use liquid eyeliner and have flicks every day. I tried not doing it for a while but didn’t feel like me!
It’s so hard at first. I remember spending an entire day trying to empty the dishwasher but the baby would cry every time I put her down. But those days don’t last forever. And you will get through it!8. Any tips for new mammas that you’d wish you’d known before?!
Also not to rush everything… I was desperate to get back to work after my first child because I felt it defined me but actually its okay to just be a mum for a while. I wish I’d relaxed more. So I guess to enjoy it because, as cliche as it sounds, they really do grow up so fast.
Finally, do NCT. I had the best NCT group and I think we kept each other sane. Some of the girls are now my closest friends and our kids are so close. It’s lovely to have local friends with kids exactly the same age as your own. It makes for a great support network.
